The New South Wales Government says it is spending more than $9 million to double the number of foster care places for Aboriginal children in south-west Sydney.

The funding, to be spent over the next three years, will see the number of foster care places in the region rise to 120.

The NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Paul Lynch, says the children will be placed with other indigenous families.

"One of the great issues in Australian history, of course, how you deal with children at risk from the Aboriginal community," he said.

"It's quite critical I think that the foster care that is provided is sensitive to Aboriginal cultural practices and in fact is with Aboriginal families."
